SBS POLYMER MODIFIED BITUMEN EMULSION

Polymer Modified Bitumen Emulsion

What is SBS Polymer Modified Bitumen Emulsion (PMBE)?

SBS Polymer Modified Bitumen Emulsion (PMBE) is an emulsified bituminous coating modified with high content of Styrene Butadiene Styrene rubber, which dries to form a tough and seamless, flexible water and vapor proof protective coating.

This high-performance emulsion combines the workability and environmental advantages of traditional bitumen emulsions with the superior mechanical properties of SBS polymer modification. It ensures durable and long-lasting pavement performance under various traffic and climatic conditions.

How to Use Polymer Modified Bitumen Emulsion?

A priming coat is strongly recommended before applying PMBE to the substrate. The primer can be mixed on-site by diluting SBS Polymer Modified Bitumen  Coating with 20% water and using this diluted mixture as the primesr coat. For substrates that are very dry or highly porous, two coats of primer should be applied. The primer is suitable for damp or newly cast concrete surfaces but must not be used on waterlogged or flowing water areas. If the top coat is applied after a delay of more than 24 hours, a new layer of primer should be reapplied.

Can be used for a wide variety of applications, which includes the following:
– waterproofing in wet areas such as toilets, kitchens etc.
– waterproofing & protective coating on concrete foundations & boundary wall footings.
– as damp proof membrane in sandwich construction.
– general vapor proof coating for both interior & exterior floors & walls.

Applications of RAHA Elastomeric SBS Modified Bitumen Emulsion Coating

RAHA Elastomeric SBS Modified Bitumen Coating is a one-component, SBS-modified bituminous liquid waterproofing membrane engineered for high-performance protection. This ready-to-use, highly elastic formulation is designed for waterproofing foundations, floors, and for rehabilitating bituminous and slated membranes.

The product is formulated using a blend of elastomers, bitumen, resins, and specialized additives dissolved in a solvent system. Its thixotropic consistency allows for effortless application on both horizontal and vertical surfaces. After curing, it forms a flexible, seamless, and durable waterproofing membrane that resists thermal variations, UV radiation, and acid rain.

RAHA Elastomeric SBS Polymeric Modified Bitumen Coating offers excellent adhesion to a wide range of substrates, including bituminous sheaths, concrete, asbestos, plaster, wood, and metallic surfaces. It is suitable for waterproofing various types of structures and support surfaces such as:

  • waterproofing in wet areas such as toilets, kitchens etc.
  • waterproofing & protective coating on concrete
  • foundations & boundary wall footings.
  • as damp proof membrane in sandwich construction.
  • general vapor proof coating for both interior & exterior
  • floors & walls.

Surface Preparation

Before applying the bitumen coating system, ensure that the substrate is completely free from dust, curing compounds, oil, grease, and any other contaminants. Depending on the level of contamination, light mechanical grinding, grit blasting, or high-pressure water jet cleaning may be used to achieve a clean and sound surface.
Any surface defects or protrusions must be removed and repaired. Areas of weak, friable, or structurally unsound concrete should be cut out and rectified using an appropriate Polycrete* repair mortar.

Priming

A primer coat is strongly recommended prior to applying RAHA Elastomeric Polymer Bitumen Coating.
The primer can be prepared on-site by diluting RAHA Elastomeric Bitumen Coating with 20% clean water and applying the mixture uniformly onto the substrate. For highly porous or very dry surfaces, apply two coats of the diluted primer.

The primer is suitable for damp or freshly cast concrete; however, it must not be applied on waterlogged surfaces or areas with flowing water. If more than 24 hours pass before applying the topcoat, a fresh primer coat should be reapplied to ensure proper adhesion.

Foundation Waterproofing

Before use, stir the contents of the RAHA SBS Elastomeric Polymer Bitumen Coating drum thoroughly to ensure all settled material is fully dispersed. Apply the jellified emulsion at a coverage rate of 1–2 m²/L per coat, depending on the required dry film thickness.

Each subsequent coat should only be applied after the previous coat has completely dried, and must be applied perpendicular to the direction of the previous coat. Broadcasting clean, dry sand onto the wet coating can help improve adhesion for further coats and increase the final dry film thickness.

If plaster or a cement render is to be applied over the bitumen coating, broadcast clean dry sand onto the primer coat while it is still wet.
Take care to avoid damaging the first coat during the application of later coats. Should any damage occur, the area can be easily recoated after proper surface preparation.

Protection

The RAHA Bitumen Elastomeric Coating must be protected from damage caused by ongoing site activities. Protection can be achieved using a 50 mm cement–sand screed, an asphaltic protection board, or a 1000-gauge polythene sheet in areas where the backfill material is not excessively coarse.

Advantages

  • Cold applied.
  • Single component, easy to apply.
  • Can be applied on damp substrates.
  • Asbestos free, odorless. Can be applied in closed or confined spaces.
  • Solvent free & environmentally friendly.
  • Good resistance against chloride and sulphate ions.
  • Has good adhesion to most building substrates.
  • Seamless/joint free.
